The Upside of Google’s User Tracking

We’ve written a lot about whether there are potential costs to privacy in Google’s practice of recording the Internet Protocol address of every computer that connects to its service. Those are still very live issues, but Google is introducing one feature that uses its monitoring of I.P. addresses, and other data about users, to their benefit.

Users of Gmail now will soon have the option to see which computers are logged into their accounts and can read their e-mail, Erwin D’Souza, a Gmail engineer wrote in a blog post Monday.
