Intel's Itanium Comes to Key Point(WSJ)

Itanium, which first went on sale in 2001, so far hasn't sold in volumes that justify the billions of dollars that Intel has invested in the line. In the first quarter, research firm IDC estimates, only 8,182 Itanium-based systems were sold -- slightly less than the year-earlier quarter -- though revenue for computer makers on their production of units with Itanium chips grew 42% to $640 million.

In addition to H-P, companies selling Itanium-based systems include Silicon Graphics Inc., Unisys Corp., NEC Corp., Hitachi Ltd. and Fujitsu Ltd. In the first quarter, though, more than 80% of unit sales came from several lines of H-P computers.
